As far as eating out goes, I rarely need an excuse, but I feel like afternoon tea is a little more of a luxury. So with Mother’s Day around the corner and an invite from Marco’s New York Italian Restaurant to try out their afternoon tea, I got my favourite ladies together for a treat…
With a wine list and a tea menu to peruse, we got stuck in, plumping for a sparkling rosé and a selection of teas. The Twinnings brews came in mugs that wouldn’t go amiss in a service station but a hot cup of Assam was just what I needed.
The afternoon tea for four arrived on a miniature picnic bench (that still managed to fill most of the table) and looked incredible. Starting off we had finger sandwiches of cream cheese & smoked salmon and egg, plus hoisin duck wraps that were filled to the brim. The goats cheese and red onion tart was everyone’s favourite though, with crisp pastry and filling packed with flavour.
Moving on to dessert, and what better to pair with fizz than more fizz? The Prosecco jellies didn’t skimp of the vino and were the first to disappear. The scones were fresh and benefitted from lashings of whipped cream and jam. We were all getting a little full by this point, but how could we resist the other perfect little puddings?
The brownie was a definite hit – deceptively light with a strong cocoa taste. The baked cheesecake, Eccles cake and Manchester tart (very apt for the location) all left a smile on our faces.
Not only does the restaurant do fabulous occasion afternoon teas, but also a traditional afternoon tea and a gentleman’s version too. The latter definitely suits the vibe of the restaurant, with it’s mini American takes on Italian classics. Thanks to the fantastic staff for having us – the service throughout our visit was impeccable and a return is definitely on the cards next time I’m in the area.
Marco’s New York Italian is at Media City, M50 2EQ. I was invited to taste and review the menu. All opinions are my own.
